Back Pain & Sciatica
Back pain and sciatica are among the most common musculoskeletal conditions, affecting people of all ages and activity levels. While back pain may stay localized in the lower spine, sciatica involves irritation of the sciatic nerve, causing pain that can travel into the hip and leg. With targeted physical therapy, most cases improve significantly without the need for invasive treatment.
CAUSES
Back pain and sciatica can develop due to:
* Herniated or bulging discs
* Muscle strains or ligament sprains
* Degenerative disc disease
* Spinal stenosis
* Poor posture or prolonged sitting
* Weak core muscles
* Improper lifting mechanics
* Piriformis syndrome (muscle compressing the sciatic nerve)
Identifying the underlying cause allows us to tailor treatment for faster and longer-lasting relief.
Symptoms
Back Pain Symptoms:
* Dull, aching pain in the lower or upper back
* Muscle tightness or spasms
* Stiffness and reduced mobility
* Pain that worsens with bending, lifting, or prolonged sitting
Sciatica Symptoms:
* Radiating pain from the lower back into the buttock and leg
* Sharp, burning, or shooting pain
* Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
* Weakness in the affected leg
Symptoms may range from mild discomfort to severe pain that limits daily activities.
Treatment
Our evidence-based physical therapy approach focuses on relieving pain, restoring mobility, and preventing recurrence. Treatment may include:
* Manual therapy to improve spinal alignment and joint mobility
* Targeted stretching to reduce muscle tension and nerve irritation
* Core strengthening exercises to stabilize and support the spine
* Postural correction and ergonomic training
* Nerve gliding techniques for sciatica
* Movement retraining and injury prevention education
Our goal is to not only reduce pain but also strengthen your back and improve movement patterns so you can return to work, exercise, and everyday activities with confidence.
