Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and heightened sensitivity to touch. It affects how the brain and nervous system process pain signals, often amplifying discomfort. While there is no cure, physical therapy plays a key role in managing symptoms and improving daily function.

Causes

The exact cause of fibromyalgia is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve abnormal pain processing in the central nervous system. Contributing factors may include:

 * Nervous system hypersensitivity

 * Physical or emotional trauma

 * Infections or illness

 * Chronic stress

 * Sleep disturbances

 * Genetic predisposition

Fibromyalgia is not caused by joint damage or inflammation, but by changes in how pain signals are interpreted by the body.

Symptoms

Symptoms can vary from person to person and may fluctuate in intensity. Common symptoms include:

 * Widespread muscle pain and tenderness

 * Persistent fatigue

 * Sleep disturbances

 * Morning stiffness

 * Headaches

 * Difficulty concentrating (“fibro fog”)

 * Increased sensitivity to touch, temperature, or pressure

Symptoms may worsen during periods of stress, illness, or lack of sleep.

Treatment

Our physical therapy approach focuses on gentle, progressive strategies to reduce pain and improve energy levels without triggering flare-ups. Consistency and gradual progression are key to managing fibromyalgia effectively.

Treatment may include:

 * Low-impact aerobic conditioning to improve endurance

 * Gentle stretching and mobility exercises

 * Gradual strengthening programs

 * Postural training and body mechanics education

 * Relaxation and breathing techniques

 * Pain management education and pacing strategies

Our goal is to help you reduce pain sensitivity, improve physical function, and regain confidence in your movement so you can return to daily activities with greater comfort and control.
